. maryland has reported six heat-related deaths. that's the same number maryland had all last year. three deaths have been reported in virginia from the heat and one in the district. definitely time to stay inside. the key today, if you do have to go outside, you want to wear light-colored clothing and have plenty of water with you. otherwise you're going to feel faint. it is extremely hot, unbearable if you're watching this on tv and you're in air conditioning, you're in the best spot in the house. >> good advice. thanks, jane. >>> mandatory water restrictions are in place for people in montgomery or prince george's county. the good news is relief is on the way. they have fixed the cracked water main but the work isn't finished yet. our reporter has been covering this since the dark of morning and she has the latest from potomac, maryland. >> reporter: the damaged section of pipe could be seen sitting along the side of the road this morning. the new segment is in place and work crews have begun to partially backfill the hole. the repair work should be completed sometime today. but that d

of water main breaks in did d.c., maryland and virginia that has left many with limited water service in the heat wave. the latest break happened in it arlington around 10:00 this morning at the intersection of second street and courthouse road. it left several customers in the immediate area without water. traffic has also been slowed. crews were hoping to have the pipes fixed by early this evening, but they say problems with the pipe valves could hold up those repairs. >>> repairs have wrapped up on a main located in the 2700 block 6 pennsylvania avenue. it left 200 customers without water this morning including a nearby firehouse. the pipe is now fixed and water has been restored to the area. >>> there is a chance of thunderstorms tonight and a possible wet weekend, too. >> veronica johnson is standing by and tells us what we can expect as we head right into the weekend. >> i don't think we'll have any widespread severe weather across the area, but we could have one or two cells that put down high winds through the area. and of course we need the rain. so we'll take it in the form

made it over 100. frederick, maryland, 102. winchester, virginia, in the shenandoah valley, 101. mid to upper 90s in many spots. you factor in the humidity and the heat index values are over 100, literally everywhere. some places are dangerously hot. winchester, 112 heat index. culpepper, 111. downtown, 106. the current heat index in leonardtown, maryland. the excessive heat watch is for tomorrow. that's the next step up in the advisory criteria for weather. that means the heat index values may surpass 110 degrees. temperatures the rest of the evening, mid 90s for, through 5:00. low 90s through at least 7:00 p.m. only into the mid 80s by 11:00. a toasty warm evening is on the way for tomorrow. that will be the worst of the worst. the highs tomorrow, air temperature may crack 101 degrees tomorrow. that will crush the old record high temperature. as we get into sunday, maybe a chance for a shower or a thunderstorm. we'll talk more about that and bring you up to date on tropical storm bonny across south western florida getting ready to move into the gulf of mexico. back to the news for

of the outages are in maryland. and here are the latest numbers. in montgomery county, 23,000 customers are still without electricity. nearly 5,000 customers are waiting in prince george's county for the power to come back on. and in the district, about 2,000 customers are still out. pepco says the goal is to have all power restored by tomorrow afternoon. meanwhile, call-in lines continue to ring nonstop. elaine has that story. >> there would be such an influx of calls. we said after 3:00, call and as anticipated, there was a large volume of call and it created a problem for our technology. that has been resolved now. >> reporter: there have been numerous complaints by customers claiming they aren't getting accurate informing about repair times. crews have been working around the clock since sunday night's storm, even enlisting the help of hundred of workers brought in from out of town. meantime, police officers spent the morning rush hour directing traffic at several dark intersections like this one at industrial parkway. pepco says it is prioritizing by safety. >> downed wires continue to be a

popped up on doppler 1 in northern frederick county maryland. another one down into culpepper counties across northern virginia and central virginia. the general movement on the storms drift do you think to the southwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour. so if you're lucky enough, and you're going to have to be very lucky indeed to get under one of these showers you might pick up a quick tenth, but 99% will stay dry. temperatures mid-90s around town. a little cool were a breeze coming off the bay. now annapolis. but the heat index values, because of all the humidity out there, remain in the high 90s and low 100s. so it still feels like 100 degrees. it's just not actually 100 yet. temperatures will stay in the low 90s to about 7:00 this evening. so a very hot and humid evening coming up. only one or two lonely showers out there. rain chances are on the rise as we head into tomorrow, and perhaps into the weekend as well. and that may mean a little change in the temperature as well. i'll give you a detailed check of the seven-day forecast coming up in just a few more minutes. pat? >> all right,

. michael voltaggio appeared on "top chef" with his brother brian who owns volt in maryland. michael greet creates lamb cofta. >> first what we're going to do is start out with a ground beef and ground lamb. break this up a little bit in the bowl. to the middle add one egg. and then basically we'll build everything on top of that. we'll chop everything and sort of build it right in the middle and mix everything together at the end. about four table spoons of mixed sesame seeds, able a table spoon of chile paste, two table spoons of chopped cilantro stems. teaspoon of cue men, or reg no. fresh bread crumbs. mix that together. we're going to add salt to this and put it in the refrigerator. the next part is a salad made up usually of wheat, barley, lemon, cucumber. this has a twist. using steel cut oates. we have our bull garr wheat, steel cut oates, cucumber, onions, add or cou mayto. now we'll build the layers of flavor. juice and zest of four lemons, last of the herbs, spice it up a little bit, add about one or two table spoons of cumin. we're going to mix everything up. last component is

speeding tickets in one maryland town will be getting a refundful they've learned that drivers ticketed two speed cameras in brentwood may not have really been speeding. anyone who received the ticket between june 24th and july 13th is being asked to e-mail the police department for a refund. officials are not revealing what went wrong with the camera system. the town of brentwood has two cameras at the intersection near 28th street and rhode island avenue. >>> a former manassas teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student pleaded guilty today. kevin ricks was arrested at osbourne high school where he taught english back in february. investigators discovered naked photographs on his laptop of former students. as well as exchange students he hosted. in some cases, sex acts were depicted. he faces new federal charges after an indictment yesterday. julie carey has more on that part of the story at 5:00 tonight. >>> the veteran new york congressman is being investigated for ethics vial sxagsz this afternoon we're learning what those allegations are. a house panel is investigatin
